The balance is upset not only physically, but also emotionally. It can feel like everything is happening \u201cto me\u201d - without control or choice. But this is where the power of self-help begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is self-help and why is it important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Self-help is a conscious, intrinsically motivated action taken by a person to improve their psychological, emotional or physical state - without direct professional involvement. It can be a small act, such as taking a deep breath in a moment of anxiety, or a long-term practice, such as keeping a diary or cultivating gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Research shows that self-help not only reduces feelings of helplessness, but also improves stress regulation, emotional resilience and overall quality of life (Ferretti et al., 2023; Sieverding et al., 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does self-help work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Self-help works through four psychological mechanisms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Awareness:<\/strong> I recognise my feelings and needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Mobilising internal resources:<\/strong> I remember what I've learned or been able to do before.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Action:<\/strong> I use specific practices (breathing, visualisation, gratitude writing).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Observation and adaptation:<\/strong> In hindsight, I realise what helped and adjust my actions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This cycle contributes to <strong>self-efficiency<\/strong> - confidence in your ability to deal with difficulties - an essential mental health resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can self-help replace professional help?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">No. It is not a substitute for therapy, but <strong>complementary approach<\/strong> or the first step in taking care of yourself.
